My House Arabianranta is a week-long event that takes place in autumn 2012 and illustrates the journey of five local buildings from the drawing board to the everyday life of its residents.

The goal is to raise awareness of how blocks of flats are built, what are the factors that affect the local architecture, and how the Per cent for Art Scheme has been used in the art purchases of the buildings. You can read more here.

Would you like to open your building, or perhaps even your own flat, to the public in autumn during Helsinki Festival or Design Week? Ask your housing co-operative to sign up for My House Arabianranta event! The five most distinctive buildings will be taken on board. Read more

My House Arabianranta is an open event that takes place in August/September 2012. In the event, we invite the architects and artists of five buildings to the penthouse club rooms of those buildings to tell about the guiding principles, requirements and dreams that guided the planning/designing work. We hope to find a couple of residents from each of these buildings, who would like to open their flat to the public for one day. Enrol your building to the event now! The enrolment ends 4.2.2012. We would very much like to have participating buildings that represent different forms of housing. Read more

Brainstorming sessions in (My House) Arabianranta

Posted on March 9, 2012 at 22:13, by pigasus

The WDC Weekend (3.–5.2.) in Helsinki was wild! There were over 180 events to choose from and one of the days happened to coincide with Restaurant Day that has recently gained international attention. Amidst all these temptations the joint brainstorming session of My House Arabianranta and Edible Arabianranta fared reasonable well and gathered about ten interested individuals. There were both familiar faces from Artova activities and new people. Our group felt that these initiatives enable us to have a modest influence the formation of our home district. Read more

The valuable publicity

I moved into Vallila recently, right nextdoor to Arabianranta district. That means I’ve had more opportunities to view the bustle at Kääntöpaikka and the buildings that have been signed up for My House Arabianranta. I still don’t have an internet connection so for that I’m relying on libraries, Kääntöpaikka and mbar that have been very important places for me as of late. My working hours have been reduced to the naptimes of my child and the early evening hours. Read more

The residents have been introduced to the designers!

The latest big My House Arabianranta meeting was on Saturday the 17th of March in Arabianranta library. In a brainstorming session that we had with all the participating buildings we had a first taste of dialogue between the residents, architects and artists. In the same occasion, we also put together a palette of suggestions to be used as a tool when formulating a concept for each building. Now that programs are being drafted for the participating buildings, the tips and ideas below can be useful.

We’ve made our pick: buildings for My House Arabianranta are here!

After being in touch with a whole lot of people, we are slowly reaching a clearer view of the participating venues. It also looks likely, that the event will take place during Helsinki Design Week (10.–16.9.2012).

As was intended, different forms of housing are represented in the event. There are homes rented from the city and other parties, there are owner-occupied flats, new flats and older ones… In fact, not all of the participating buildings and gardens are yet complete!

Third open brainstorming session for My House Arabianranta

Posted on May 10, 2012 at 22:19, by pigasus

There’s quite a bustle in the event venues! More and more residents are signing up, and the building-specific concepts and the activities for September are shaping up. We have also opened a Facebook page for the initiative.

The next brainstorming session for My House Arabianranta is on Monday the 14th or May at 5 – 7.30 p.m. in the clubroom of Kääntöpaikka. Welcome!

In this next meeting, we’ll jot down what the residents have planned for the event in their building. We’ll be joined by Tuula Isohanni who will give a presentation about the history of the Per Cent for Art Scheme and also about the Arabianranta residential area. Naturally, we’ll share good examples of fun, tried and tested ideas of things the residents have already organised together.

For more information about the brainstorming session and initiative in general, contact Satu: satu.onnela[at]gmail.com, mobile +358503228930.

Inspiration from interaction, again

Posted on July 9, 2012 at 22:34, by pigasus

July is in the heart of summer. It’s not all dead in the city but mainly people are who knows where, living their dream out of the reach of the long hand of the email. From the project management point of view this is problematic, of course, especially as we weren’t bright enough to settle a date for the next meeting. I miss all these exciting people, but I think there might be others like me in this district for whom it’s business as usual. And, of course, I wish all the best for those who are taking a distance and a holiday they have been looking forward to. Read more

Some sweet co-operation coming up!

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 22:02, by pigasus

It’s been decided: the final dates for My House Arabianranta are 11. – 16.9.2012 which happens to be also the Helsinki Design Week! In addition to sharing the same dates, My House Arabianranta and HDW will co-operate in matters relating to PR/marketing which is this year aimed at an increasingly international audience.

There seems to be an abundance of enthusiasm for the initiative. For example, My House Arabianranta is a part of an event trio together with OpenHouseHelsinki and Open Studios. We’re looking at one great event, people!

What we would really like to see next is more local residents getting involved and more sponsors interested in (also international) exposure.
