Arabianranta residents wish for a dog park

Posted on February 4, 2008 at 21:45, by pigasus

A dog park has been a dream of many Arabianranta residents for quite some time. In the autumn of 2007, the Artova district association conducted an enquiry (in Finnish), that found a dog park to be one of the most popular wishes among the area residents.

Little did we think that four years later the park would still be in the planning phase.

Application for a WDC 2012 initiative

Posted on August 18, 2010 at 22:00, by pigasus

Based on the discussion in the two grower meetings, Airikka drew up the following proposal for the application for a WDC 2012 initiative.

EDIBLE ARABIANRANTA

Edible Arabianranta is a plan thought up by the residents of the area, which unites urban agriculture and environmental art to form common living rooms for the residents.

There is an oasis in a lush park by a stream. A few city residents are looking after their plants. Summer squashes seem to yield a particularly good harvest this year. Read more

Grower meeting at Aalto University School of Arts

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 22:36, by pigasus

Scott and his students gave a presentation to the future growers of what lies ahead. Of the 46 people who had signed up as growers some 20 turned up. The plan is to cultivate in concrete rings of different sizes that the city has promised to donate. The plot will be covered with forest floor and bark chippings, and the current plan is to have fruit trees, berry bushes, a pergola, tree trunks for benches and a (donated) shed for tools. Read more

April developments and money, money, money

Posted on April 25, 2011 at 22:30, by pigasus

Airikka has had to step down from co-ordinating the initiative for personal reasons, and she asked me to take on her responsibilities.

Helsinki city landscaped the plot by tipping cubic meter after cubic meter of sand into the pit. The job was completed on the 21st of April 2011. I can’t help thinking how the sand that was tipped over snow and ice will stay put…

Scott applied for a grant with the School of Arts on behalf of the park project, and Artova applied for World Design Capital 2012 funding. Read more

Delivering on one’s promises

Posted on May 17, 2011 at 22:02, by pigasus

After being informed (12.5.2011) of Spirit of Artova receiving the much-wished-for WDC status, I started wondering once more what kind of commercial value the Design Dog Park we’re planning can offer to potential partners at the end of the day. To rephrase a bit more pointedly: Is the confirmed WDC status in any way a genuine and considerable sales argument for the commercial partners? Read more

Another grower meeting at the School of Arts

Posted on May 18, 2011 at 22:06, by pigasus

The second grower meeting at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture saw little participation.

I met Scott at the plot of cultivation the previous Sunday and so knew beforehand about the plans he and his students had made. Stara had promised to deliver fewer than 20 concrete rings but it would still amount to less than one cultivation ring per grower. Furthermore, the donation of a garden shed is now a dead duck. The first meeting of Spirit of Artova directorial group

Below you can find a memo concerning the first meeting of Spirit of Artova directorial group on the 20th of June 2011. All consecutive memos related to similar meetings will be published un-edited in the blog and may sometimes seem a bit cryptic, but we hope that they demonstrate aptly the administration process of the whole initiative. The directorial group consists of Taina Mikkola (chairperson), Kati Pelkonen and Miikko Oikkonen.

This is the website for all the future twists and turns of the Spirit of Artova projects. Updating will start properly in August. The idea is to publish everything that goes on in the projects as accurately and transparently as possible.

Edible Arabianranta has proceeded with leaps, and there are already 20 urban growers tending their cultivations in Aalto City Garden at the junction of Muotoilijankatu and Arabiankatu. Go and have a look!
